Recent studies show that Peyronie's disease (induratio penis plastica) is an inflammatory condition of the penis in which the elastic layer (tunica albuginea) of the penis within the central tissue (corpora cavernosa) is damaged. As a result, the affected area loses elasticity, and when filled with blood, it does not expand but instead causes the penis to curve in the direction of the scar. The process begins with the oxidation of various fats and protein molecules, leading to inflammation of the elastic layer (tunica albuginea) and the erectile tissue. The currently available treatments are not yet fully satisfactory and mostly only help to alleviate the symptoms of Peyronie's disease. If penile curvature persists in the later stages of the disease, when the pain has already subsided, surgery must be used for correction.
